BEHIND THE BUILD

Project story

Bubbling drywall and baseboard were the first signs of a basement leak in Greenville, Rhode Island. Opening the wall showed that the visible damage was a symptom of two contributing conditions: inadequate exterior grading and a small non-structural hairline crack in the poured-concrete foundation wall. TKG approached the work as diagnosis first and finish repair second. A specialty basement-waterproofing contractor sealed the crack with an expanding sealant. TKG removed the adjacent patio pavers, raised the exterior grade several inches and reset the pavers to direct surface water away from the house. Once the water-entry conditions had been addressed, TKG restored the damaged wall assembly, including studs, insulation, drywall, paint and baseboard. All work except specialty foundation-crack sealing was self-performed by TKG. This project demonstrates a practical troubleshooting process: investigate the cause, bring in specialty help where appropriate, correct the exterior condition and then restore the finished space. The photos document the original room, investigation, foundation-crack detail, exterior paver area and subsequent repair work.
